The Importance of Teamwork
The Importance of Teamwork
Teamwork is essential in today’s business world, and it’s a critical ingredient of successful organizations.  Without it, a harmonious company culture cannot be achieved.

Successful teams don’t just happen — it takes putting people together with good problem-solving, decision making, communication, and interpersonal skills. In other words, it is a process and it takes skills to build successful teams.

Making an efficient, hard-working team requires them to possess a set of soft skills that don’t come easily. Soft-skills are not something that can be taught to anyone who comes on board with the team. Those skills are honed through experience.

Smart leaders know that for their teams to work well, they must accurately identify employees’ skill sets and assign them tasks that are well suited to their abilities.

These 8 characteristics are common to great and effective teams:

1- They are dependent on each other. They know that their team members would be there to help them when needed.  They also know that without one another, the goals of the team cannot be achieved.

2- They work in an atmosphere of trust. The team members know they can work in peace without worrying about members talking behind their back.  They know they can count on each other to fulfill their respective tasks.

3- Feel a sense of ownership for their jobs. Do not make them feel like puppets.  Each team member should feel encouraged to be proactive in fulfilling their responsibilities.

4- Encourage individual members to apply their individual talent.  Give them a sense of freedom.  Make sure that the potential of each team member is not stunted.  They should be able to exercise or apply their talents if necessary.

"The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team."
5- Practice open communication. In order for the team to be successful, everyone should be on the same page.  Limited communication can lead to misunderstanding which will only stand in the way of the team.  Everyone should feel comfortable to communicate with each other.

6- Encourage members to learn on the job and develop new skills. The team should have the mindset of being able to learn from one another.  Encourage them to learn as it is important for their growth.

7- Decision-making involves the entire team.  Be open to the opinions and suggestions of each team member.  Each member should be have a say in decision because it affects them and their work.

8- Resolve conflicts quickly and constructively.  Do not let conflicts escalate to the  point where everyone on the team feels uncomfortable because of the tension.  Be fair when fixing those conflicts so that the team can move forward.

The team’s success will built on itself, and your team and your organization will be the better for it as the team takes on more responsibility.  Be sure that each member feels like they are essential to the team because they are.  Do not let anyone feel left behind.
